She’s gone.
Pretty, young, and promising.
All of life ahead.
Always eager to please us.
Bubbly, never withdrawn.
Enough self-confidence for the whole world.
So suddenly it took her.
We weren’t prepared though we were told it would happen soon.
It crept up on us so unexpectedly.
One day everything was fine.
Overnight our lives were dramatically changed.
We’ve talked with others who have experienced the same loss.
It helps.
What, you sympathetically ask, happened to our precious kid?

Parents often question why youth no longer wish to do things with them outside the home. It almost seems that youth are embarrassed to be seen with their parents. Dr James Dobson explains one reason why…

“Teenagers are engulfed by a tremendous desire to be adults, and they resent anything which implies that they are still kids. When they are seen with “Mommy and Daddy” on a Friday night, for example, their humiliation is almost unbearable. They are not really ashamed of their parents; they are embarrassed by the adult-baby role that was more appropriate in prior years. Though it is difficult for you now, you would do well to accept this healthy aspect of growing up without becoming defensive about it. Your love relationship with your kid will be reestablished in a few years, though it will never be a parent-child phenomenon again. And that’s the way God designed the process to work.”

Scripture has many passages on the family relationship, and of fathers and kids.  Here are a few of the responsibilities of fathers mentioned in the Bible:

  • Provide for his family (Matthew 7:9-1; 1 Timothy 5:8)
  • Instruct his kids (Proverbs 1:8)
  • Exhort, encourage and implore kids (1 Thessalonians 2:11)
  • Punish unruly kids (Deuteronomy 21:18-21)
  • Raise the kids in the discipline and nurture of the Lord without provoking them or exasperating them causing them to lose heart (Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21)
  • Discipline his kids (Hebrews 12:7)
  • Love his wife (Ephesians 5:25,28,33)

15ann.jpgThis Easter egg was presented by Czar Nicholas II to his wife, Alexandra, on Easter Sunday, April 23rd, 1911. It was made to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of Czar Nicholas II’s accession to the throne.

The opalescent and opaque white enamel egg is encased within a grid-shaped cage work of gold and green enamel oval-shaped garlands bordered by diamonds, which frame eighteen scenes painted by court miniaturist Vassily Zuiev, depicting miniature portraits of the Imperial family, the czarina, her husband and their five kids, and highlights of significant occasions from their lives together, and major events of the reign. The dates of Nicholas and Alexandra’s wedding, 1894, and the fifteenth anniversary of the Coronation, 1911, are set beneath the portraits of the Czarina and the Czar respectively. Beneath a table diamond at the top of the egg is the crowned monogram of Tsarina Alexandra; the base is set with a rose-cut diamond – signed Fabergé.

Sonora Smart Dodd establishes Father's Day

Sonora Smart Dodd establishes Father's Day

In 1909 a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. She wanted a way to let her father, William Smart, know how special he was to her. William Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth kid. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five kids by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. In the eyes of his daughter, he was seen as a courageous, selfless, and loving man.

When a group of 10-year-olds in a church Sunday School class expressed their views of “What’s wrong with grownups?” they came up with these complaints:

  • Grownups make promises, then they forget all about them, or else they say it wasn’t really a promise, just a maybe.
  • Grownups don’t do the things they’re always telling the kids to do–like pick up their things, or be neat, or always tell the truth.
  • Grownups never really listen to what kids have to say. They always decide ahead of time what they’re going to answer.

A story tells that two children were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one child slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: “TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.”

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the child saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: “TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.”

A medical student studied at the London Hospital. Robert Morrison and William Milne had gained a foothold in China for missionary work. Should he go and join them? He wrote in his journal “I knew God was speaking. I knew evangelists would be given and their support secured, but there unbelief came in. Suppose the workers are given and go to China: trials will come; their faith may fail; would they not reproach you for bringing them into such a plight?”

“I did not see that the Power that would give the men and the means would be sufficient to keep them also, even in the interior of China.

1. Don’t miss the boat.
2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.
3. Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.
4. Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
5. Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
6. Build your future on high ground.
7. For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.
8. Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
9. When you’re stressed, float a while.
10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
11. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there’s always a rainbow waiting.
